ANATOMY OF A SCREENPLAY PART TWO

Today you will get to know the end of this story, if by any chances I resolved it the way you imagined it or if the ending disappointed you. The truth is, just by forcing yourselves to crave some imagination that is the best reward you can get.

One of my favorite guilty pleasures or vices is to see movies in the middle of the story, so I can turn it into an exercise to guess the plot and understand each character. A good film must be able to capture your attention at any part.

INT. SCORPION’S BAR – NIGHT

It is a decrepit old bar in which the customers tend to be over fifty years. Victoria and Gabriel are sitting at the bar stools, with two glasses of red wine, they are the last customers.

VICTORIA

Nice improv with the second

imaginary friend, you went

from craziness to immortality.

GABRIEL

Are you sure somebody believed

I asked you to have sex?

VICTORIA

For some people it is

more fun to imagine the

conflicts than guessing.

We are asking the

audience to come up with

their own interpretation.

GABRIEL

Just like if you came after

the first act to a play and

you have to be very focused

in order to understand the

plot. What do the stats tell

us?

Victoria takes out her moleskine from her bag, she looks at some pages until she arrives at the one she’s looking for.

VICTORIA

In the beginning I had my

doubts this little play

will be effective, but

95% of the audience showed

interest on the play. Half

of them believe you are

insane, the other half believes

you can talk to ghosts. The

key fact, given by Pedro, is

that 50% of the customers at

the café leave after nine

o´clock. But with your

performance they all stayed

until ten thirty.

GABRIEL

Our play increased the

profits.

VICTORIA

Pedro offered us 20% of

the tips and free food

for the next show.

GABRIEL

I can’t believe I have

a stage and a salary.

VICTORIA

We can’t accept the

offer. This was an

experiment, we wanted

to see if plays can

leave the stage and

still capture the

audience.

Victoria raises her glass, Gabriel does the same and they toast by clinching their heads.
